Pure Mandarin Immersion Programme

A Week of Authentic Mandarin Learning Experience 

Designed for children aged 4 to 7, our Pure Mandarin Immersion Programme offers a rare opportunity to experience a full week of authentic Mandarin learning in a local EtonHouse school in China. Children learn alongside local peers in a natural Mandarin-speaking environment, where language is lived, experienced, and expressed through daily routines, play, projects, and friendships.

This five-day programme immerses children in the heart of Sichuan’s rich history, culture, and traditions. Each day focuses on a distinctive cultural theme, from the historical Wuhou Shrine of the Three Kingdoms to the architectural charm of Kuanzhai Alleys, from the fascinating ecology of giant pandas to the vibrant flavours of Sichuan street food, creating a multi-layered, hands-on experience of Shu culture.

Learning goes beyond the classroom. Children actively engage with their surroundings through inquiry-based experiences, documenting stories at Wuhou Shrine, making architectural rubbings, building alley models, sketching traditional structures, observing panda behaviour, crafting bamboo ornaments, exploring local ingredients, and participating in role-play scenarios.

The week culminates in the “Sichuan Charm Showcase & Parent Workshop”, where children present their discoveries through drama and model demonstrations. Families join in immersive experiences such as making Tangyuan, painting Sichuan Opera masks, and learning Chinese calligraphy, writing meaningful characters like “Shu.”

Set in a safe and stimulating environment, this programme nurtures Mandarin fluency, creativity, critical thinking, confidence and intercultural understanding, offering children and families unforgettable cultural experiences and memories.

Our Cultural Immersion Programme combines classroom learning with curated excursions, enabling children to apply their Mandarin skills in real-world settings. Through this programme, children experience local culture firsthand through visits to iconic Chengdu attractions, encounters with giant pandas, and participation in hands-on cultural experiences. Explore Dujiangyan Panda Base

Nestled at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain in Dujiangyan City, the Dujiangyan Panda Base is one of the four major facilities of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government, this world-class base serves as a key center for panda disease prevention, rescue, and rehabilitation.

Surrounded by lush bamboo forests and tranquil mountain scenery, it offers families a rare opportunity to observe giant pandas up close while learning about ongoing conservation efforts. Families will enjoy a heartwarming and educational experience as they discover the gentle charm of China’s national treasure in its natural, serene habitat.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Located on the Minjiang River in western Chengdu, about 56 kilometres from the city of Chengdu, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System is one of the world’s oldest and most remarkable hydraulic engineering projects still in use today. Built over 2,000 years ago, it continues to irrigate vast farmlands, bringing life and prosperity to the region.

Renowned for its innovative dam-free water diversion design, Dujiangyan stands as a masterpiece of ancient Chinese engineering and wisdom. The system comprises the Fish Mouth Levee, Feisha Floodgate, and Bottle-Neck Channel, ingeniously regulating water flow, controlling flooding, and ensuring consistent irrigation without the need for dams. Dujiangyan offers families a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and sustainability of ancient Chinese civilisation.

Step into the World of Ancient Shu

Explore the Jinsha Site Museum, which houses the ruins of the ancient Shu Kingdom dating back over 3,000 years. Spanning an area of approximately four square kilometres, this remarkable archaeological site reveals the artistry and spirit of early Chinese civilisation through exquisite gold masks, jade ornaments, and ivory carvings.

Wander through its serene gardens and interactive exhibits to experience how the ancient Shu people once lived, created, and celebrated. A visit to Jinsha Site Museum is an inspiring experience that connects families to the origins of Sichuan’s rich cultural heritage.

Poetic Journey for Families

The serene Du Fu Thatched Cottage is the former residence of one of China’s greatest Tang Dynasty poets Du Fu, who lived there for nearly four years and wrote over 240 timeless poems that reflect his deep compassion and poetic brilliance. The site has been carefully preserved through the centuries, offering a peaceful haven to explore history, poetry, and culture.

Families can engage in poetry recitation experiences that brings to life Du Fu’s classic verses such as “Two golden orioles sing amid the green willows, a row of white egrets ascends into the blue sky.”  Through storytelling, guided walks, and creative experiences, children will nurture an early appreciation for traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of classical literature.

Sichuan Opera and Traditional Arts Experience

Immerse your family in the vibrant world of Sichuan Opera at Shu Feng Ya Yun, a premier cultural destination in the heart of Sichuan. Celebrating the rich heritage of Western Shu, the venue showcases authentic folk skills, classical opera performances, and traditional theatrical arts in a state-of-the-art multifunctional theatre.

This experience offers families the chance to witness the artistry of face-changing, acrobatics, and live opera performances. Children and parents will gain a deeper appreciation of Sichuan’s cultural traditions while enjoying an unforgettable, immersive show that blends history, artistry, and entertainment.

Taste of Sichuan Cuisine 

A visit to Chengdu isn’t complete without experiencing the bold, vibrant flavours of Sichuan. From the fiery, numbing kick of traditional hotpot to the rich, spicy-sweet skewers at bustling street stalls, every bite tells a story of the region’s culinary heritage.

Families will get to savour these authentic local delicacies such as hotpot and skewered food. Children will also dive deep into exploring the fascinating culture and the science behind Sichuan cuisine.

While children enjoy their immersive Mandarin learning experience in school, parents may choose to explore the city at their own pace or join our specially curated cultural workshops. These hands-on sessions provide parents with a meaningful way to connect with Chinese art, culture, and tradition, while creating beautiful memories of their own.

Chinese Calligraphy

Guzheng Music

Ink Wash Painting

The programme is designed for children aged 4 to 7 years who are curious about Mandarin language and culture. We welcome children who do not speak Mandarin, however the school environment including the teachers and children are primarily in Mandarin language. 

The key difference is in the programme structure and learning environment. The Pure Mandarin Immersion Programme is a fully in-school programme focused on developing Mandarin proficiency through classroom learning and peer interactions. The Cultural Immersion Programme combines on-campus learning with curated cultural excursions in Chengdu, ideal for families who wish to explore the city’s iconic sites while engaging in meaningful language and cultural experiences.

The immersive nature of the programme helps children become more fluent, expressive, and confident in Mandarin, while also learning to adapt to new environments, collaborate with peers, and engage with diverse perspectives. 

For the Pure Mandarin Immersion Programme, the fee covers the school immersion experience, learning materials, and meals in school. 

For Cultural Immersion Programme, the fee covers the school immersion experience, learning materials, meals in school, and the cultural excursions (for the child only). Additional fee applies for parents who wish to accompany the child on the excursions.

The programme fees do not include airport transfers or daily transportation, unless otherwise stated. Families are responsible for arranging their own transport, such as taxis or private cars. We can provide contact information for reliable local transportation services upon request.

Children will be in the respective EtonHouse campuses from 9am to 4pm. 

The sample schedule provides a guide for each of the programme. It may be subject to adjustments due to school schedules and unforeseen circumstances. Families will receive the finalised itinerary once the programme is confirmed. 

Yes. Children will be grouped into classes according to age levels. They will interact and learn alongside local EtonHouse students. 

Your child’s safety and well-being are our priority. Please notify us at least two weeks prior to the programme’s start to ensure proper arrangements. Late requests will be considered but cannot be guaranteed. 

Yes, we strongly encourage your child to attend all five days of the programme. Each day builds upon the previous, and the learning experiences are designed as a continuous journey. 

For this programme, all 7-year-olds will join the K2 class in our EtonHouse schools. However, not to worry, children will engage in age-appropriate learning experiences and feel comfortable learning alongside their peers.
