The Senior Years

“What good is an idea if it remains an idea?
Try. Experiment. Iterate. Fail. Try again. Change the world.”

What to Expect in the EtonHouse High School Curriculum (16 - 18 years)

Picking a high school for your child is understandably an important decision. You want your children to be engaged in school. You also want to make sure they receive an education that opens as many doors for them as possible, whether it is about their university choices or the career path they ultimately embark on.

The weight of the decision can be stressful — there are so many options in Singapore and factors to consider, and the many specialised terms and acronyms used in education can be confusing.

One helpful way to navigate the scene is to think about which curriculum will best equip your child to take on the future. There are generally three internationally recognised pre-university curriculums — the American Advanced Placement (AP) programme, British GCE A-Levels, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB DP).

At EtonHouse High School, we offer the IB DP for important reasons:

Key benefits of the IB DP

  • It is considered the gold standard in education sought after by universities worldwide. Graduates of the IB DP are accepted at the best universities and colleges worldwide. Research has shown that students who graduate with the IB Diploma have a 57% higher chance of attending one of the top 20 UK universities, compared to students who study the British A Levels. They are also 21% more likely to be admitted to the most prestigious universities in America.

  • The IB DP offers a balanced and broad education so students gain more than traditional academic knowledge. The curriculum hones investigative, research, and critical-thinking skills that are useful in university and the 22nd-century workplace. Students also have to study two subjects so they become capable players in the global economy who are respectful of different cultures.

The core components of the IB DP curriculum:

A Rigorous Mix of Academic Subjects

Students have access to an academically challenging programme that offers both breadth and depth, thus equipping them to be successful in the subjects they pursue in the future.

Creativity Action Service

Creativity Action Service strengthens students’ personal and interpersonal learning and allows them to make meaningful contributions while honing their cultural sensitivity and empathy towards intricate issues faced by society.

Theory of Knowledge

This is a mandatory component of the IB DP. In Theory of Knowledge, students are asked to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know, through an oral presentation and a 1,600-word essay.

Extended essay

Each student has to embark on a 4,000-word essay, backed by research of their own. The whole process is self-directed and is compulsory. Through this, students learn how to formulate research questions, develop arguments, and communicate ideas, preparing them for undergraduate education.

Why you should enrol your child in an EtonHouse High School

Student agency is the driving force behind the high school programme

At EtonHouse High School, we respect our students as confident individuals who are capable of changing the world. Instead of mollycoddling students, our team of specialists give them the space they need to grow and learn independently, while always being there to guide and support them. This process results in highly engaged and innovative young adults who are motivated to push learning boundaries.

Hear our students talk about their SMART projects

College counselling and career guidance

Whether students want to discuss where to go for university, brainstorm what course to take, or simply talk to someone about how stressed they’re feeling, we are here to counsel and guide them. All we want is to help them make a successful and smooth transition from one life stage to the next.

Pastoral care

The school’s ethos is centred around strong pastoral care within the boutique nature of the campus. Families can look forward to rich interactions between the staff and students, and a personalised approach to nurturing students to achieve their fullest potential.

Central location

We offer the IB DP at EtonHouse Orchard, the only international school in the heart of Orchard Road. The location is conveniently close to residential areas so students can cut back on travelling time, and have more time for learning and growing. Our High School students also get to enjoy the surrounding area, popping out for coffee and lunch to one of the many cafes and restaurants nearby. It’s great preparation for when they start university.
